Troubleshooting: Publication child pages disconnecting from publication (parent) landing page when scheduled to publish at the same time (issue: SDPSUP-4378)

I scheduled all the pages of the publication to publish at the same time and they all published, but the child pages of the publication all seemed to publish as individual pages. And when I checked the landing page, the children pages had disappeared.

This issue was raised by an SDP community member via the service ticket on 1 June, 2022.

Summary of issue

This occurs when publication child pages are scheduled to publish at the same time as the child pages.

Suggested workaround

If you are setting a publication to publish at a specific time, publish the publication (parent) landing page 5 minutes before the child pages. If there are grandchild pages, them publish these 5 minutes after the child page. You will also need to republish the publication landing page after the child pages have published so that they appear in the index on the front page.

If you experience anything similar to this issue please raise a support ticket with details about the affected publication.

🤔 Problem

A publication’s child pages can disconnect from the parent page if they are all scheduled to publish at the same time.

🌱 Solution

 1. Publication parent page is scheduled to be published first.

 2. Child pages are scheduled to be published 5 minutes later.

 3. Grandchild pages are scheduled to be published 5 minutes after the child pages.

 4. Publication parent page is scheduled to be re-published at the very end (so that the child pages appear as navigation cards.)

For example, if you would like your publication to be available by 9am:

This guide covers how to review and schedule the publication template for publishing (to automatically go live at prescheduled date and time).

Info

This guide is for approvers and site admins. If you have editor access, use the publication request guide.

Go to the publication you need to schedule and select the Scheduled updates tab.

Select the Add Scheduled update button.

...

Choose either:

 • Latest revision (which will publish the last saved page version before the scheduled publishing time), or

 • the specific revision number you’d like to publish.

Choose Publish or Archive on the Execute transition dropdown.

Add in the date, month, year and time for when you'd like the page published or archived.

Select the Scheduled updates button to save.

...

The time format is hours, minutes, seconds, am/pm:

 • For 11:59pm, enter 11:59:00PM.

 • For midnight, enter 12:00:01AM.

When published, child pages will appear as both navigation cards and in the side menu on the parent page. So, make sure you schedule the pages to publish in the following order:

 1. Parent page

 2. Child pages (5 minutes after the parent page scheduled publishing time)

 3. If included, grandchild pages (5 minutes after the child page scheduled publishing time)

 4. A 2nd publish of the parent page (5 minutes after the child or grandchild pages scheduled publishing time).

To schedule a page for 9 am, schedule your publishing times for before 9 am. The below example will ensure your pages are live by 9am:

 1. Parent page: scheduled for 8:30am

 2. Child pages

...

 1. : scheduled for 8:35am

 2. Grandchild pages

...

 1. : scheduled for 8:40am

 2. Parent page 2nd publish

...

 1. : scheduled for 8:45am

...

Full publication – live by 9am.

Info

Only CMS users who are an Approver or Site admin can schedule content to be published.
